Argus Eyes is a free live transport map. We've built it to need as little of your data as possible. This page explains, in plain English, what the app, the waiting list and this website do with your information.
Who we are
Argus Eyes (the app, this website and the server at api.arguseyes.xyz) is made and run by Robert Paddock, an independent developer in the United Kingdom. "We" on this page means Robert Paddock, who is the data controller for the personal data described here. You can reach us at hello@arguseyes.xyz.
The short version
- The app has no accounts, no adverts, no analytics and no tracking.
- To show stops near you, the app sends a rounded location (to about 100 metres) to our server. It isn't stored.
- If you join the waiting list, we keep your email (and the city and device you choose to tell us) only to tell you about launch and new cities. We never share or sell it.
- This website uses no cookies and no third-party analytics.
The Argus Eyes app
Location. If you allow location access, the app uses it on your device to centre the map and find your nearest stops. To look up nearby stops and departures, it sends your position to our server at api.arguseyes.xyz, rounded to roughly 100 metres first, so we never receive your exact location. The server uses it to answer that one request and then forgets it. We don't store it, log it against you or build a history of where you've been.
You can use Argus Eyes without location access. You just won't see the "nearest stops" view until you pick a place on the map.
Everything else stays on your device. Your settings, such as which map layers are shown, are kept on your iPhone or iPad. We can't see them.
No accounts, no tracking. There is no sign-in, no advertising, no analytics or crash-reporting SDKs, and no tracking across apps or websites. We don't use your data for profiling.
Live transport data. Train, bus, camera and roadworks data comes from Transport for London, National Rail (Darwin) and the Bus Open Data Service through our server. Fetching it doesn't involve any personal data.
Server logs. Like any web service, our server and hosting provider may briefly keep standard technical logs (such as IP address and time of request) to keep the service secure and working. These are not used to identify or track you and are deleted automatically after a short period.
The waiting list
When you join the waiting list, we store:
- your email address (required)
- the city you'd like next, if you tell us
- your device (iPhone Duo, other iPhone or iPad), if you tell us
- which page you signed up on and when
We use this only to email you when Argus Eyes launches and when new cities go live, and to work out which cities to add next. That's it. We will never share, sell or rent your details, and we won't send you marketing for anything else.
Our lawful basis is your consent. You can withdraw it at any time: use the unsubscribe link in any email, or email hello@arguseyes.xyz and we'll delete your details. We keep your details until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them, or until we stop running the waiting list.
This website
arguseyes.xyz sets no cookies and uses no third-party analytics, fonts or trackers. Everything is served from our own domain. The only time this site sends data anywhere is when you submit the waiting-list form.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law (UK GDPR) you can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it or have it deleted, and you can object to how we use it. Email hello@arguseyes.xyz and we'll reply within a month. If you're not happy with our answer you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
Argus Eyes doesn't knowingly collect any personal information from children. The waiting list is for people aged 13 and over.
Changes
If we change how we handle data, we'll update this page and the date at the top. If a change matters, we'll tell people on the waiting list before it takes effect.
